Iain Ballamy

Iain Ballamy is an internationally recognised saxophonist and composer with a distinctive style and voice.

He has been described variously as urbane, original, melodic, freethinking and uncompromising.

Listed between Count Basie and Chet Baker in the BBC’s publication ‘100 Jazz Greats’ his work is contemporary and encompasses strong jazz, folk and classical references yet remains un-encumbered by formalities and traditions.

Ballamy has toured worldwide playing at most major concert halls and festivals and has appeared on over 100 albums across a wide range of musical genres and styles ranging from concerto premieres as soloist with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra to sessions at Abbey road studios for Robbie Williams. He has appeared many times at Ronnie Scotts club in Soho where he learned from some of the jazz greats.

He has appeared as a judge on BBC’s young jazz musician of the year and won BBC Jazz award for innovation.

Ballamy is a visiting professor of saxophone at the Guildhall school of music and drama and Royal Academy of Music.
